Insulation across the Concho Valley

Every town page talks about the houses and buildings common there, the work people ask about most, and the local questions we hear.

Same West Texas sun, six very different places

San Angelo has the widest range of homes, from older houses in established neighborhoods near downtown to rentals that turn over with Goodfellow Air Force Base moves and Angelo State University semesters. Grape Creek, northwest of the city, keeps growing with homes on acreage and metal shop houses. Wall, southeast of town, is farm country on the Lipan Flat, full of barns, equipment sheds and farmhouses.

Christoval sits south on the South Concho River. Miles is a railroad town in Runnels County on US 67, northeast toward Ballinger. Mertzon, the Irion County seat, lies southwest on US 67 in ranch country.

What ties them together is the climate. Long stretches of dry heat, strong afternoon sun on every roof, wide gaps between daytime highs and nighttime lows, wind that carries dust, and the odd hard freeze in winter. Insulation here has to slow heat coming through the roof first, then hold indoor temperatures when a cold snap arrives.
