Metal building, pole barn and shop insulation in San Angelo

Closed cell spray foam for ranch shops, pole barns, barndominiums and equipment sheds. Less heat off the roof, no dripping on cool nights, less dust blowing in.

Inside an insulated metal shop

Steel buildings take the worst of West Texas weather

A bare metal building in the Concho Valley gets it from every side. By early afternoon the sun has turned the roof panels into a griddle, and that heat pours straight down onto whatever is parked or stored underneath. Then the sun drops, the dry air gives up its heat fast, and the steel cools off quicker than the air inside. When the panels get colder than that air, moisture condenses on them and drips on tractors, tools, saddles and feed.

Wind and dust finish the job. Every lap seam, screw hole and gap along the eaves lets fine dirt blow in, so anything stored inside wears a coat of it by the end of a dry, windy week.

Closed cell spray foam handles all three. It sticks directly to the steel, so warm indoor air never reaches the cold metal. It packs a high R-value into a thin layer, it seals the seams and fasteners it covers, and it stiffens the panels a bit as well.

  • Closed cell spray foam on roof panels, walls and end walls
  • Condensation control by sealing the steel surface itself
  • Dust and air sealing at seams, fasteners and eave gaps
  • Barndominium living areas designed separately from the shop side

Built for how you use the building

A hay barn, a welding shop and a barndominium are three very different jobs. We start by asking what the building is for, then size the foam to match.

We insulate pole barns, ranch shops, equipment sheds and barndominiums on acreage around Wall, Christoval, Miles, Mertzon and Grape Creek, along with shops and light commercial metal buildings in San Angelo.

Building by building

What each type of building usually needs

Pole barns

Open sided or partly enclosed barns mostly need the roof done to cut radiant heat and stop dripping. Enclosed walls get foam where you want shade and a calmer space for animals or hay.

Ranch shops

If you work in it, you want both roof and walls covered at a thickness that lets a shop heater or a mini split keep up. Sealing the eaves also cuts down the dust on your bench.

Barndominiums

The living quarters are treated like a house, with foam or batts sized for heating and cooling. The shop or garage side can get a lighter design. We price the two parts separately so you can see each one.

Equipment sheds

The main goal is keeping condensation off machinery and cutting the worst of the summer heat. A thinner layer of closed cell foam on the roof often does it.

Garages and hobby shops

Detached steel garages near the house usually get roof and walls, so a vehicle, a freezer or a weekend project is not sitting in an oven.

Light commercial

Warehouses, service shops and storage buildings get a design based on the hours people work inside and whether the space is heated or cooled.

Why closed cell is the usual pick

ApproachStops dripping?Things to know
Closed cell spray foamYes, bonded to the steelHandles heat, cool night condensation and dust in one layer
Open cell spray foamNot dependably on its ownCan work in a heated and cooled barndominium with the right design
Faced fiberglass blanketOnly while the facing stays wholeRips, loose seams and pests let air reach the metal
Reflective bubble wrapOnly if every seam stays sealedLow R-value and hard to seal on an existing building
Bare metalNoScorching at midday, damp on cool nights, dusty year round

Foam thickness is not one size fits all. A building you only need to keep dry gets less than a shop you plan to heat in January and cool in August.

Foam goes on in passes to the listed thickness, then we clean up the site.

What metal building insulation costs

Closed cell foam is priced by the board foot, which is one square foot at one inch thick. The roof and wall area and the thickness you need set most of the price. Eave height, whether we need a lift, how far the building sits down a ranch road, and how much has to be covered inside also play a part.

Building new? It is easier and usually cleaner to foam a steel building before shelving, wiring runs and equipment go in. Call us once the shell is up and the doors are hung.

Metal building questions

Why does my barn roof drip when it is this dry out?
  • Clear nights cool the steel quickly, and it ends up colder than the air inside.
  • Moisture from people, animals, vehicles or a wet slab condenses on it. Closed cell foam on the steel stops it.
How thick should the foam be?
  • It depends on how you use the building.
  • An equipment shed needs less than a shop you heat and cool, and a barndominium living area needs the most.
Will it keep dust out?
  • It seals the seams and fastener holes it covers, which stops a lot of blowing dirt.
  • Roll up doors and vents still need their own seals.
Do I need to insulate an open pole barn?
  • Foam on the roof alone can cut a lot of overhead heat and stop drips on what is parked below.
  • Walls usually are not worth doing on an open sided barn.
Can you work around equipment?
  • Yes. We cover what cannot be moved. An empty building goes faster and costs less.
Do you insulate barndominiums?
  • Yes. The living space and the shop side usually get different designs.
  • We price each part separately so you can decide.
Do you travel to ranches outside town?
  • Yes. We work across Tom Green County and into Runnels and Irion counties.
